The Rangeway project in Belfast, Maine was an interesting community effort involving the city government, Waterfall Arts and the neighbors. The idea was to mark the public right-of-ways to the ocean in an inviting, low-budget, zero-maintenance manner. My idea was to split a large rock and pull the two halves apart as kind of a permission gateway. In the long, low rock above, the need was to block off some vehicular access. In the gateway below, I wanted a tall, big stone that could claim its space at the end of a promontory. An interesting video explains the effort in greater detail and shows one of the slabs being split. http://vimeo.com/27880797
