With mallet and chisel, Douglas M. Coffin has been hand-carving inscriptional letters and motifs in stone since 1988. About two-thirds of his work is private headstones (tombstones or gravestones); one-third is building inscriptions, architectural donor walls and plaques.
In addition to headstones, personal memorials and architectural carving, Coffin has created fireplaces, garden stones, alphabets, fountains, memorial walls, benches and installations predominantly along the east coast, from Newfoundland to Washington, D.C.
During his recent trip to Boulder, Colorado to carve the Koelbel name into the new Leeds School of Business, Coffin described the process on camera - click here to watch the video.
